November 2004.
This is the Latest stage of getting my 1972 GTE SE5a the way it should be.
Thinking of rewiring ?. Maybe stuff here that helps. As I have just completed the rewire my first piece of advise is don't. It has taken me in excess of 100 hours. A lot of the time was due to all connections etc being Tinned, Crimped, Soldered, Sleeved and Heatshrunk and every Bulb, Light, Motor etc has it's own separate and independent earth. I am aware that there is an opinion that Soldering Joints is not such a good idea. Not a problem as all the Cables, Connectors etc are of Marine Grade Quality and all soldering was done with Tip Temperature Controlled Soldering Equipment. I wanted as few connectors as possible so all Cables are a continuous run without the use of multi-connectors. It is "interesting" wrapping the Cables once installed but it can be done. There are dimensions for the Rear Loom ( See Below ) as it was easier to make then fit. There are no "Big" Current cables behind the dash, all low current stuff driving relays. As I was drawing a new Wiring Diagram I thought I would try to make it as "Easy" for others to follow. To some the "Mystery" of Electricity is confusing. Bad enough having a Diagram that confuses them more so I hope mine is easier to follow. I have drawn it in such a way as to show the rear of the Car on the Left and the front of the Car on the right with Gauges etc as they should be seen. All the connections shown on the switches etc are as they are connected in the Car, this can be used if required even if you have not rewired. It will show what connection goes from to where. I hope there is something of interest that helps and I would like to thank some members of the RSSOC who assisted with some of the information. There will be more to come as I have other wiring stuff to complete and will update within the next couple of weeks so it may be worth a revisit. The bottom of the page has links to Wiring Diagrams, Rear Light Earth Modification/Repair etc. There may be stuff you find useful even if you have not done a rewire. Please don't take to much notice of the condition of the rest of the Car. Next year is the time to make it look nice. It must be reliable and have all the "Dirty" big jobs done before it gets some Carpets, Paint etc. Has the rewire made much difference ?, Yes, the Headlights shine and light up what is in front (They used to sort of "Glow"). When the cooling fan comes on it stays on for less than a minute, it used to be on for 3 to 4 minutes so the Fan Motor must be happier with 12 Volts and Rear Lights, Indicators etc are as they should be.
One good idea to get the most from your new wiring or even the old wiring is to fit a better alternator. Have a look here for more information.

If you are having problems with the Rear Lights it could well be the Earthing on the Bulb Holders.
