When it was time to replace the Calipers on my Scimitar SE5a there was a number of options. I tried to find new replacements. The dealers had some but the price was quite high so I thought I would see what options were open to me. I looked at all the normal places like E-Bay but all there was were old ones taken from another Scimitar or rebuild kits ( Seals etc ). Used Calipers taken from another old Scimitar was not an option as they were probably in poor condition and getting a rebuild kit may have seemed like another option but due to the age of the Calipers the pistons etc would quite likely be rusted so this was not a viable option. When it comes to things like brakes I do not like to take chances especially as the braking system on a 1972 Scimitar is only single line hydraulics. I looked around for a company who could rebuild my Calipers and found Bigg Red . I looked at their web site and found that they did do rebuilds for Scimitar calipers. An e-mail to them confirmed that they would be pleased to help and normally they would send rebuild calipers and when I returned my old ones they would refund the deposit payable. Unfortunately they had no Scimitar calipers in stock and advised if I sent mine they could rebuild and return within a few days. I would ask via e-mail to Bigg Red as they could have some calipers in stock. As I use my Scimitar as a daily driver that proved to be difficult for me so I waited until I found a Scimitar being broken for spares, purchased the old calipers, sent them to Bigg Red who returned them within a week. I was very pleased with the rebuild as all the seals and pistons were replaced and the bolts holding the caliper half's together were also renewed. The cost for this service was £123:00 for both calipers, this price includes vat and carriage ( May 2008 prices ).
